Hunting on Putney Mountain Association lands

PMA Hunting Policy

Hunting is permitted on nearly all Putney Mountain Association land. The one exception is the 20 acre Tamler parcel, which was donated to PMA with a no-hunting restriction.

Safety

PMA encourages safe and considerate hunting practices along with safety precautions for all visitors. We recommend blaze-orange (or other highly visible) clothing for all land users between Labor day and mid-December. Be particularly cautious during rifle season for deer – usually the last two weeks in November. Please be sure to keep your pets leashed for safety.

Best Hunting Practices

Certain hunting practices are incompatible with PMA guidelines. These include, hounding (using off-leash dogs to chase down targeted animals) and wildlife cameras. Stands and blinds may be used on PMA land provided that hunters follow state regulations for their placement, that the equipment is clearly labeled with owners’ name and contact information, and that they are removed promptly at the conclusion of hunting season.

We request that hunters use non-lead ammunition on PMA land due to the toxicity of lead. As a conservation organization we recognize the importance of predators in the ecosystem, and discourage hunting them on PMA lands.

Survey and Suggestions

We request that hunters fill out a short PMA survey after each hunting season to help us understand the hunting harvest on PMA lands and how to improve hunting safety and access.
